Hearing protection is essential for anyone who is exposed to prolonged noise in the workplace or whilst doing a hobby, that has the potential to damage their hearing. This might be playing loud music, shooting, or motorsport.
A noise exposure of more than 82 dB over 8 hours is enough to cause permanent hearing damage. Every 3 dB thereafter will half the time that you can be exposed to this level of sound.
So, for example, 85 dB will give you a safe exposure time of 4 hours and 88 dB 2 hours.

A single exposure to loud sound can result in tinnitus, eardrum perforation, and temporary or permanent hearing loss. That’s way the World Health Organisation recommends that adults not be exposed to more than 140 decibels and 120 decibels for children.
Using hearing protection, such as ear plugs, decreases the intensity of sounds and can help prevent hearing loss. Off the shelf hearing protection products can be purchased from local pharmacies and a number of online retailers, both for adults and children.
You can also protect your hearing by avoiding or keeping a safe distance from very loud sounds. If you have noticed ringing in your ears, unfortunately, this could mean you may have experienced symptoms of noise induced hearing loss. It is important to be aware of your ears and move away when noise gets too much.
